Basic Life Support with an AED: What Is It and How Important Is It to Saving Lives?

Understanding Automated External Defibrillators (AED): A Lifesaving Device in Emergencies

Did you know… if sudden cardiac arrest occurs, the patient’s chance of survival decreases by 10% for every minute without help?
One of the devices that can truly save lives in this situation is the Automated External Defibrillator or AED.

🔎 What is an AED?

An AED is a medical device designed to help restart the heart of a patient experiencing sudden cardiac arrest or abnormal heart rhythms by delivering an electric shock to restore a normal heartbeat.

Key Features

  • Easy to use, even by non-medical personnel

  • Provides step-by-step voice instructions

  • Compact, lightweight, and portable

📌 Types of AEDs

Currently, there are 2 main types of AEDs:

  1. Fully Automatic AED

    • The device analyzes the heart rhythm

    • If abnormal, it delivers a shock automatically

  2. Semi-Automatic AED

    • The device analyzes the heart rhythm

    • Prompts the user to press the SHOCK button at the right time

🛠 Steps to Use an AED

  1. Assess the situation and call for help (Dial 1669)

  2. Check the patient’s responsiveness – Gently shake, check breathing for 10 seconds

  3. Start CPR if necessary – Compress chest 5–6 cm deep at 100–120 times/min

  4. Turn on the AED and follow the voice instructions

  5. Attach the electrode pads

    • Adults: Place one below the right collarbone and one below the left chest

    • Children: Place one pad in the center of the chest and the other on the back near the heart
