AED Device: A Vital Emergency Aid in Critical Moments

AED – A Vital Emergency Aid in Critical Moments. Fainting, unconsciousness, and sudden cardiac arrest are conditions that can occur in people of all ages and may arise from chronic health problems, sudden acute health issues, or even environmental factors at that moment.

Regardless of the cause, when someone collapses and becomes unconscious, there is a high risk of death within minutes, as the human body cannot survive without oxygen for more than 4 minutes.

The most crucial method to save a patient’s life is immediate resuscitation through CPR, combined with the use of an AED. This is why we want to introduce everyone to AED – an essential emergency device recommended to have at home.

What is an AED?

Many people have learned that if someone faints, loses consciousness, or suffers sudden cardiac arrest, the best first response is to immediately perform CPR by chest compressions. This is correct and effective, as it can be done right away without needing additional equipment.

However, many may not know that CPR becomes far more effective when combined with an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). CPR has limitations, such as the rescuer needing to apply force deep enough (at least 5 cm), at a rate of 100–120 compressions per minute, and continuously until emergency services arrive. There are also risks of incorrect hand placement, which may reduce its effectiveness in stimulating the heart.

Therefore, alternating the use of an AED with CPR ensures continuous resuscitation. An AED works by reading and analyzing the patient’s heart rhythm, then delivering an electric shock to restore normal heart function. It should be used only when the patient is dry, free from water droplets, and without conductive objects nearby, to prevent harm to both patient and rescuer.

Today, AEDs are available in many models but are generally divided into two main types: semi-automatic AEDs, which require the user to press a button to deliver the shock, and fully automatic AEDs, which deliver the shock automatically. Both types are equally effective in saving lives.

How to Use an AED

An AED is much simpler to use than many people might worry about.
Most devices also come with a detailed manual or voice instructions, as follows:

  • Turn on the device and follow the voice prompts or the manual instructions. Check the device to ensure it is ready for use, such as confirming that the electrode pad cable is connected properly, ensuring the cables are not damaged, and that the battery is still functional.
  • Remove the protective backing from the electrode pads and attach them firmly to the patient’s chest. The first pad should be placed below the right collarbone, and the second pad below the left breast.
  • Wait for the AED to analyze the patient’s heart rhythm. During this process, rescuers must not touch the patient. If the AED detects a rhythm that requires defibrillation, it will notify you.
  • Press the shock button (for semi-automatic AEDs) or wait for the device to deliver the shock automatically (for fully automatic AEDs). Continue until the device instructs you to stop using it, such as “No Shock is Needed,” or prompts “Start CPR.” Immediately resume CPR for about 2 minutes. If the patient’s vital signs do not return, switch back to the AED and repeat.

For maximum safety, before performing CPR or using the AED,
it is recommended to call emergency services or a hospital.
This ensures professional guidance during resuscitation while waiting for emergency responders to arrive.
